It's been a busy summer...

Progressive Dane has been working really hard on our legislative priorities over the last few months. We are making alot of progress but we want to also keep you up to date on everything that happened over this hot and busy summer.

Supervisor Kyle Richmond has helped lead the effort to push for locally grown foods to be served in Dane County facilities such as the new courthouse and the jail. Richmond has been working on the Local Food Policy Advisory Subcommittee. They studied the issue for about a year and they recently released their results. Richmond said:

"This has been a wide-ranging, citizen-led effort that should result in a better regional food system in and around Dane County," said County Supervisor Kyle Richmond. "I congratulate these 15 county residents on their work. It’s going to result in healthier people and a stronger local economy."

The committee's findings were reported on in the Capital Times. You can also visit their web site for more information or read their press release.

Supervisor Richmond also started a Clean Air Subcommittee subcommittee to focus on solutions to the growing air quality problems. The subcommittee will study ways in which County government itself can lessen negative impacts on local air quality, and educate and encourage other local institutions and residents to do the same.

An experienced array of citizen members will lead the Clean Air Subcommittee. They are Rich Bogovich, Wisconsin Interfaith Climate & Energy Campaign; Jenny Carney, Leonardo Academy; Marney Hoefer, State Bureau of Air Management; Angela James, Madison Gas & Electric; Rob Kennedy, University of Wisconsin; Eden Schaefer, State Asthma Program; Maria Redmond, State Bureau of Energy Efficiency; and Julian Zelazny, Defenders of Wildlife.

Other County Board members appointed to the subcommittee include Sup, Chuck Erickson, Sup. Brett Hulsey, Sup. Scott McDonell, Sup. Echnaton Vedder and Sup. Dorothy Wheeler.

Have you ever been curious about the budget process of the Madison Common Council? Former Council President Brenda Konkel wrote an informative blog entry on it at dane101.com a while back. As the budget debate begins to take shape, this blog entry has very helpful and useful background information.

Dane101.com also recently mentioned Progressive Dane's In the News Blog in an entry about organizational based blogs in Dane County. Our In The News Blog has been a successful way to keep PD's membership and the community at large informed about Progressive Dane. Look for PD to expand its online capabilities in the near future with online membership, membership renewals and donations.

Finally, Progressive Dane had our annual Garden Party fundraiser on July 22nd. The event was well attended and the donations exceeded our expectations. PD would like to thank everyone for their contributions and for making the event a success. Although we had a great fundraiser, Progressive Dane still has a ways to go to achieve all of our fundraising needs for the year. If you didn't get a chance to sponsor the fundraiser, please consider sending in your contribution to Progressive Dane.
